RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CAMPAIGN
"Conserve and Protect Florida's Scenic Beauty"
A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT BY INITIATIVE PETITION
WHEREAS, Article II, Section 7(a) of the Florida
Constitution states "It shall be the policy of the state to conserve and
protect its natural resources and scenic beauty"; and
WHEREAS, Florida's legislature has not effectively
upheld Article II, Section 7 (a) of the state constitution; and
WHEREAS, Trees are removed, or destroyed, on public
property and public rights-of-way to enhance the visibility of a billboard;
sponsored beautification projects have been jeopardized, severely modified or
destroyed to accommodate billboards on adjoining or other property, and;
WHEREAS, For almost seventy-eight (78) years the
Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. (FFGC) strongly supported policies
that will strengthen Conservation of Natural Resources programs, support
increases in Roadside Beautification and Scenic Highway programs, and promote
preservation and conservation of Florida's Scenic Beauty for both residents
and visitors to appreciate and enjoy; and
WHEREAS, Article XI, s.3 provides that "the power to
propose the revision or amendment of any portion or portion of this
constitution is "reserved to the people"; and
WHEREAS, The goals, objectives and program of the
FFGC are in harmony with the "Conservation and Protection of Florida's Scenic
Beauty: Florida's Billboard Amendment; be it therefore
RESOLVED, That the Board of Directors of the eighteen
thousand member Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., meeting in regular
session on September 11-12, 2002, strongly support the Scenic Beauty, Inc.
Petition Initiative to amend the Florida Constitution-Article II, Sec. 7
Natural resources and scenic beauty.
